Critically acclaimed developer Owlcat Games has officially pulled back the curtain on its next major project, Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy. Now officially listed on Steam, the upcoming title serves as a direct video game adaptation of the beloved tabletop roleplaying ruleset. Following the massive success of their 2023 hit Rogue Trader, the studio is returning to the classic computer role-playing game (cRPG) genre. However, this time they are shifting their focus from broad interstellar trade to a much darker, intimate, and sinister corner of the galaxy which is the secretive, power-hungry, and terrifying inner workings of the Holy Inquisition. While Owlcat’s legal representation has firmly advised against officially pleading "guilty" to making life-ruiningly addictive 100-hour time sinks, the studio is moving forward with the release anyway, actively courting thousands of new counts of reckless sleep deprivation.
Stepping away from the heroic power fantasies common in the sci-fi franchise, Dark Heresy casts players directly into the mantle of an Inquisitor. Tasked with exposing hidden rot in places where no one else dares to look, players must navigate a labyrinth of imperial bureaucracy, cultist conspiracies, and inner organizational conflicts. The narrative places a heavy emphasis on investigation and deep moral ambiguity where players must actively hunt down clues, interrogate suspects, and piece together conspiracies while exploring the mysteries of the maddening Tyrant Star during the catastrophic Noctis Aeterna (The Long Night). Pursuant to the Lex Imperialis, players will execute the ultimate discretion as judge, jury, and summary executioner. Whether you strictly uphold the puritanical mandate of the Emperor or embrace a more radical, pragmatic approach, every decision carries heavy narrative consequences, meaning you can completely throw due process out the window, blame a totally innocent local vendor just to clean up your quest log, and watch an entire planet burn because your inner murder-hobo felt like min-maxing the campaign's chaos metrics.
Tactical, isometric turn-based combat returns but has been heavily refined to deliver deep interactivity where every tactical decision feels impactful. Players will command a diverse warband of customizable acolytes, using deeply complex yet elegant progression systems to build out highly specialized ability trees and execute brutal combat maneuvers. Under strict cross-examination by the game's brutal action-point economy, you'll need to think twice before wasting your turn, lest your squishy Sanctioned Psyker accidentally suffer a Perils of the Warp mishap and violently detonate the entire party. While Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy does not yet have a concrete final launch date, development is moving fast. A Closed Beta covering the entire 20-hour first act of the game is currently live for early founders who back the project, giving fans a direct hand in shaping the experience and beta-testing the inevitable launch bugs before release.
According to its official Steam storefront page, the game is currently slated as a PC exclusive.
