Barotrauma: Barsuk v. Dugong - A 1,400-Hour Veteran's Expert Testimony to Starter Subs

Listen up, fresh meat. I have spent over 1400 hours at the bottom of the Europan ocean. I have seen more reactor meltdowns than successful missions and have been husked, bitten by Mudraptors, and griefed by my own medical doctor more times than I care to admit. Today, I am appearing as an expert witness in the case of Player v. The Abyss. You are trying to decide which Tier 1 Scout submarine will be your first coffin, and I am here to provide the tactical discovery you need to make that choice.

Exhibit GG: The Barsuk

The Barsuk is a budget-friendly disaster waiting to happen. At a measly 3,999 Marks, it is the cheapest way to experience the terrifying sensation of water filling your lungs. It looks like a rusty soda can that someone glued a gun to, and legally speaking, the designers should be tried for gross negligence.

The hull is made of hopes and dreams, which is to say it has almost no structural integrity. However, it offers a surprisingly aggressive weapon loadout for such a cheap coffin. It comes standard with one Coilgun and one Pulse Laser. The inclusion of a Pulse Laser is like giving a toddler a high-powered attorney. It is flashy and cuts through hulls like a hot knife through butter, but if your reactor tech is a clown or your gunner is blid, you will be out of power before the first Crawler is dead.

Exhibit WP: The Dugong

The Dugong is the "Old Reliable" of Europa. At 5,000 Marks, it represents a significant investment in not dying immediately. It is the minivan of the ocean because it is boring, functional, and won't immediately fall apart when a Crawler looks at it funny.

The layout is far more logical than the Barsuk. It comes with a medical fabricator, which is a major win for any crew that enjoys having limbs. From a liability standpoint, the Dugong is much easier to defend in court. It features two Coilguns and one empty Turret Hardpoint.

While it lacks the raw "wow factor" of the Barsuk's laser, the double Coilgun setup is reliable and won't immediately brown out your entire electrical grid. Instead of a depth charge, it uses an Electrical Discharge Coil. This is essentially a giant "Do Not Trespass" sign that actually works. If a Mudraptor tries to hitch a ride, you can just zap them into the abyss.

The Final Verdict:

If you are a masochist or a speedrunner who enjoys living on the edge, buy the Barsuk. It is the submarine equivalent of a "Nolo Contendere" plea where you still end up in jail. You get what you pay for, and what you are paying for is a cramped soda can that relies on a single Pulse Laser to stay relevant. It is a "skill issue" test in physical form.

However, if you prefer the "duty of care" approach to captaining, the Dugong is the superior starter sub. The extra Coilgun provides consistent fire support, and the Discharge Coil handles boarders with legal precision. It is easier to repair, easier to defend, and significantly less likely to result in a wrongful death lawsuit from your crew. Choose the Dugong, keep your crew alive, and maybe you will actually make it to 1400 hours like I did. The defense rests.
