Welcome to Planet Proteus, a highly hostile aquatic jurisdiction where the environment is actively seeking summary judgment against your existence. Between a rapidly depleting oxygen meter and a planet trying to void your biological warranty, the first hour of Subnautica 2 can feel like a punitive class-action lawsuit.
If you fail to plan, you are effectively pleading nolo contendere (no contest) to the sea. Here is your legally non-binding survival checklist to conquer the early hours without suffering a total breach of life-support contract.
I. Dismissing the "Digestive Incompatibility" Motion
When you first splash down, eating local alien fish or plants actually inflicts a penalty against your health bar. The planet has essentially filed a temporary biological injunction preventing you from processing the local fauna.
The Remedy: Do not waste your limited actions cooking fish right away. Instead, swim roughly 158 meters Northeast from your Lifepod.
Look for a massive, glowing pink alien plant called the Angel Comb.
Interacting with its central bulb grants you the Digestion Adaptation DNA modification. Once equipped, you are legally permitted to cook and eat local fish without suffering internal damages. Until then, survive strictly off the Nutrient Blocks stashed in your Lifepod storage.
II. Securing Liquid Assets and Oxygen Bailouts
Before you can explore the deep ocean floor, you need a steady supply of hydration and a metaphorical "Get Out of Jail Free" card for when your oxygen tank goes completely bankrupt.
Liquid Assets: Cruise the shallows and look for Water Slugs, these are translucent blue creatures crawling on the ocean floor. Take them back to your Lifepod Fabricator to launder them into clean, drinkable water.
The "Don't Drown" Clause: Keep your eyes peeled for glowing orange orbs on the seabed called Lucifer Rotsacs. Grab them immediately. Two Rotsacs combine with two Titanium to craft the Air Bladder. Put this on your hotbar and leave it there. It instantly replenishes a fair amount of oxygen and rockets you to the surface at physics-breaking speeds when your meter hits zero.
III. The Discovery Phase: Material Laundering
To unlock actual base-building and high-tier loot, you must gather raw materials from the hole directly beneath your Lifepod and the nearby orange Coral Domes.
Titanium: Found loose on the seafloor everywhere. Essential for crafting your Survival Multitool, Air Bladder, and basic Base Modules.
Quartz: Peeled off the walls of Coral Domes. Used to craft your Scanner, Oxygen Tanks, and Glass structures.
Copper: Lining the walls of the cavern directly under the Lifepod. Crucial for manufacturing Basic Batteries and Copper Wire.
Acidic Raion Pouches: Purple and green plants located inside the cavern under the Lifepod. Combine these with Copper to craft Basic Batteries.
IV. Establishing Probable Cause: Scan Everything
Craft the Scanner as soon as you have the necessary Titanium, Quartz, and a Basic Battery. In Subnautica 2, blueprints don't just magically appear in your inventory when you pick up components, you must actively gather evidence. If you see yellow pips on your HUD, point, hold, and extract that data to establish legal precedent for new tech.
V. Restructuring Your Oxygen Portfolio
To escape the oppressive default 45-second breath limit, you need a High-Capacity Oxygen Tank, which requires Silver. Silver is hidden inside deep caves, but you don't have the air capacity to explore deep caves.
The Loophole: Do not try to mine the large silver chunks yet, mining those require a Sonic Resonator tool, which itself requires silver to build. Instead, you need to hand-pick small, spiky Silver Ore nodes.
The Primary Location: Swim approximately 200 meters North of your Lifepod, right past the first set of Coral Domes. Look for a vertical cave opening in the seafloor beneath a ledge covered in glowing, purple Jelly Lei flora.
Securing the Assets: Drop into this cave with a fully charged Flashlight and your Air Bladder ready. The small silver nodes look like spiky, glinting variants of Titanium on the cave walls. Snatch 4 to 5 nodes quickly, use your Air Bladder to bail out back to the surface, and construct your High-Capacity Tank to double your operational air budget.
VI. Corporate Relocation: Your First Bio-Upgrades
Once you have stable air, head approximately 200 meters South-Southeast of your Lifepod to locate the Welcome Center (follow the trail of blue standing lights on the seabed).
Plug a basic battery into the facility to restore power to the Biolab.
Scan the discarded tools here to unlock the Habitat Builder blueprint so you can finally establish permanent residency.
Use the console to equip your first Biomods. Dash (for a quick underwater speed boost) and Sea Skimmer (moves you faster when swimming close to the seabed) are absolute game-changers for escaping predators that have no regard for due process.
VII. Terms and Conditions
Opening your inventory, reading your log, or checking blueprints does not stay the execution of gameplay. Your oxygen and hunger meters will keep ticking in real-time. If you need a temporary restraining order against the environment, press Esc to bring up the main menu to actually freeze time.
